The August edition of Literary Review (Britain’s best-loved literary magazine) contains a review of Edward Chaney’s Genius Friend: G.B. Edwards and The Book of Ebenezer Le Page by William Palmer. He says:
… the author’s researches and his personal knowledge of Edwards do bring this strange and wayward man to life.
The review goes on to acknowledge the striking parallels between the events of Ebenezer Le Page’s fictional biography, and those of G.B. Edwards’s own life brought out in Genius Friend:
Edward Chaney demonstrates how the rich material of the novel was derived quite closely from the ‘grubby and/or gothic goings-on’ of Edwards’s own family … it might be best to read ‘The Book of Ebenezer Le Page’ before the biography of its creator.
